The Communist Chinese have accomplished what some people believed was just a matter of time. Beijing has almost destroyed the pro-democracy activity in Hong Kong as the state’s Democratic Party, the largest opposition group, is disbanding.

Sheer cruelty and the use of current instruments of persecution accomplished what many protesters in Hong Kong believed couldn’t be done. Perhaps they were stupid in thinking that Beijing wanted a” two methods, one China” coverage. Maybe they were crazy to think that Beijing meant to keep its promises to keep Hong Kong’s freedom for 50 times after Beijing regained control of the city in 1997.  ,
Beijing was constantly playing the much activity. China is an old country that is used to thinking in terms of generations, never ages. It has a strategy to rehabilitate Hong Kong into the Foreign position, and nothing would happen that interfered with that schedule. Using harassment and draconian” protection” laws, Beijing has successfully stymied the activity to keep Hong Kong’s status as a quasi-independent area and will now complete the process of making Hong Kong just another area in China after the Democratic Party disbands.
It’s difficult to remember that when the British handed over Hong Kong to Beijing, there was promise that the Communists may keep their word and let Hong Kong to keep its civil rights. For a while, Beijing kept its promises. But the rope eventually tightened, choking off any desire for freedom.
” We have never achieved what we set out to do”, Fred Li, a founding member of the party, said in an exam. ” Without money or resources, we didn’t even live ourselves”.

The group said Sunday that it held a primary voting and 90 percent of the approximately 110 people in presence voted to accept its leaders to break the group.  , ( The party plans to call another vote in the coming months before it disbands officially. )
Its chairman, Lo Kin-hei, had publicly indicated earlier that the political environment was too challenging to survive, but declined to go into details. Veteran party members like Mr. Li said that Chinese officials or their intermediaries had urged them to disband.
The Democratic Party believed that holding Beijing accountable for its promises to maintain a degree of Hong Kong autonomy and eventually allow Hong Kong to hold direct elections for its leaders.
Chinese officials didn’t just “urging” party members to disband, it was just an idle threat. According to the Associated Press, a “founding member, Sin Chung-kai,” some Hong Kong-based members were “warned in early February of the consequences” if the party continued to exist.
The pro-democracy parties once received 60 % of the vote, which is what happened seven years ago. That was prior to the brutal crackdown by Beijing and the 2019 demonstrations.
The political landscape was altered by China’s crackdown, including the 2020 sweeping security law. In prominent national security cases, former lawmakers including party ex-chairmen Albert Ho and Wu Chi-wai are currently imprisoned.
Due to the new legal framework for polls, the Democratic Party has stopped participating in elections. Some experts think Beijing may no longer see the party as worthwhile, especially since it did not run in the 2021 legislative election following the electoral overhaul.
The Civic Party, the second-largest pro-democracy political party, and a ten-year-old organization that held the annual vigil to mark Beijing’s Tiananmen crackdown in 1989, are among the other pro-democracy organizations that have shut down. Some activists choose to self-exile themselves or stop working.

China’s paradoxical and hypocritical behavior will eventually cause it to fall apart. By that time, the pro-democracy Hong Kong Democrats will likely be gone but not forgotten.
