On Wednesday, US Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that the state of Maine will be sued by the US Department of Justice for breaking President Donald Trump’s executive order, which forbids trans athletes from children’s activities.
The Maine Department of Education is the subject of a legal complaint filed by the Department of Justice now. By failing to protect people in women’s athletics, Maine is discriminating against them, Bondi said at a press event, according to news organization AFP.
Bondi claimed that by doing this, Maine was violating Title IX, a landmark civil rights law that forbids discrimination based on gender in education services that receive federal funding.
Bondi’s announcement comes after the Trump administration made a decision last week to reduce the federal funding for public schools in Maine due to the transgender sports ‘ status in women’s activities. The Republican executive order gives US federal organizations the authority to refuse funding for transgender athletes competing on women’s soccer team.

Weeks after the executive order was issued, Trump and Democrat governor Janet Mills clashed on the subject in February.
