Rümeysa ztürk, a Tufts University student, was denied bail by an immigration judge after Department of Homeland Security officials seized her from the streets of a Boston suburb and detained her.
The 30-year-old was detained by police immigration officers on March 25 and is currently being held in a detention center for multiculturalism in Louisiana. A popular movie of her incarceration captured her.
Her attorneys requested that the federal prosecutor in Vermont, where she was initially imprisoned, relieve her.
One of Ms. Aztürk’s lawyers, Mahsa Khanbabai, said in a statement on Thursday that” Ms. ztürk has committed no crime and DHS has provided zero information in their case against her.”
The prosecutor in Louisiana, according to Aztürk’s attorneys, denied her relationship after homeland security officials called her a journey risk.
The State Department letter revoking her card is one file that the state attorneys presented to support their criticism to the bond, according to court documents.
The Trump presidency alleged in the letter that she had been “associated with associations that [may ] destroy U.S. foreign plan by fostering a hostile environment for Jewish kids and expressing support for a designated criminal business,” including co-authoring an op-ed that found common trigger with an organization that was eventually temporarily banned from campus.
Khanbabai claimed that the government’s investigation of her was an assault on free conversation. The jury relied on a State Department letter that was originally submitted, and it alleges nothing in Ms. ztürk’s opinion other than her opinion piece in the 2024 school newspaper. ” This assault on free speech is hateful, but we won’t be deterred,” he said.
According to a DHS standard, “obtaining a card to live and study in the United States is a privilege not a right.”

The State Department makes” certain decisions” regarding card expulsions when someone threatens regional security, the official continued.
Attorneys for Ozturk have been making persistent efforts to get her back to Vermont and request a hearing become held the following year. The judge in Vermont is still deciding whether that is correct.
