The single women around the board are around the table, according to the female director of Sri Lanka’s Hotel Amba Yaalu, who jokes,” This didn’t look pretty serious, there are only girls around the board.”
The resort, which is located along the shores of Lake Kandalama in the lush green hills of northern Sri Lanka, had a special selling point when it first opened: the only female employees there.
It is a first in the nation to support people in a market where people hold up to 90 % of resort jobs.
Adhikari stated,” The president wanted to launch a new motel with a fresh concept.”
She described how the idea came about as a result of two disasters that devastated the region’s tourism sector: Covid-19, the 2022 fiscal crisis, and then the political unrest that eventually led to the president’s ouster.
The 42-year-old said,” It has been really a poor time,” noting that only people can fill positions in the workforce. We wanted to “acquire more opportunities and attract more women.”
User Chandra Wickramasinghe, chairman of the Thema Collection party, which owns 14 hotels, stated that he wanted to show what people can do if given the chance.
” Alas, in Sri Lanka, in the resorts, there is no gender equality,” he said.
The blame lies in the hands of a number of factors, including a society where women are seen as mothers first and foremost, and very low wages, which have led to the notion that women might as well stay at home.
When it comes to people working in hotels, he said, “in our men’s culture, it’s one great girl in the welcome and housekeepers to clean.”
” I wanted to get a little farther,” I said.
” Tactics and confidence”
A group of 75 women manage every work, including those that are typically seen as for men, for the 33 areas of the Amba Yaalu, which means “best friend” in the region’s Sinhala vocabulary.
They are motivated, much like Hansika Rajapaksa, a repair person.
The 28-year-old said,” Citizens think it’s difficult for women to get involved in maintenance.”
” But we can carry out the work that is expected of us without any difficulty after coming here and receiving education.”
After 15 years in the army, Dilhani, who just gave her first name, feels comfortable in her new position as a security agent.
” I have fought,” I said. She claimed that she has manned obstacles. With that knowledge, it is very simple to do our job around.
Some desire to set a benchmark.
Upeka Ekanayake, a 23-year-old chef, said,” This is a good opportunity for women to show their skills and to show our knowledge and confidence to the new years.”
Manager Adhikari claimed that ancient habits were immediately challenging to break.
She claimed that “our knowledgeable staff was well-versed in interacting with female coworkers.” They “waited for someone else to do things quickly,” as they were trained to do it.
The landlord, however, claimed that he had brushed off the coworkers ‘ questions.
Owner Wickramasinghe blasted the chauvinists who claimed an all-women team would simply” start gossiping,” saying,” Some people didn’t believe in it.
Nalin Jayasundera, chairman of the relationship of tour providers, praised the hotel as an “excellent effort.”
He said,” We want to encourage even more women to work in the tourism sector,” adding that it made a “very good impression on our customers.”
The customers have noticed.
One American tourist wrote in a evaluation on a booking website that she felt like I may speak up and ask questions of my companion without them asking for confirmation.
” Women’s Energy”
Nimalka Fernando, a rights activist for women, described the program as “really path-breaking for Sri Lankan culture.”
While she noted that Sirimavo Bandaranaike, the second country to appoint a person as prime minister in 1960, custom, culture, and the labor market continue to impede women’s rights.
She cites the dominance of women in the main industries that produce the nation’s income: tea, textiles, and international remittances.
She said,” Women are treated as an accessible commodity.” The key is today to provide adult labor respect.
The Amba Yaalu acknowledges its boss, but it is only the first step in making a shift.
We have parents who have two or three children, according to Adhikari. They don’t have to control what they want to do in their lives, according to the saying.
Wickramasinghe sees it as a way to draw attention to the lesson he learned as a teenager.
He said,” My mother gave me inspiration because she raised eight children and singles.
She worked in a clinic at the same time, and she did a great job. But I realized how amazing a woman can be, and how powerful she is.
