‘My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?’: Psalm 22 and Good Friday

This Good Friday, Christians around the world will remember Jesus ‘ sacrifice and death for our sins. Jesus ‘ words as he hung on the bridge are one of the things that people frequently study about the sacrifice. Verse 22 is mentioned in one speech:

From the seventh hour until the ninth hour, the entire land was covered in darkness. And when Jesus cried up,” Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani,” in a loud voice about the seventh hours,” Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani”? that is,” My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And when some spectators heard it, they said,” This person is calling Elijah.”

    Matthew 27: 45-47 ( ESV )

That makes clear use of Psalm 22: 1, which asks,” My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?” Why, in my sighing, are you still far from saving me?

We can also see different places in the death tale where Psalm 22 resonates:

He trusts in the Lord, letting him give him, let him save him, for he delights in him, is a joke that everyone who sees me makes tongues and wags their heads at me!

    Psalm 22: 7-8 ( ESV )

The main monks and the elders even made fun of him, saying that because he saved others, he may save himself. We may believe in him because he is the King of Israel, and when he comes down from the bridge, we may believe in him. If he desires him, God can give him. He trusts in Him. He claimed that” I am the Son of God.”

    Matthew 27: 41-43 ( ESV )

My hands and feet have been pierced by them…

    Psalm 22: 16b ( ESV )

When Jesus arrived, Thomas, one of the twelve, was not with them. Therefore, the various disciples said to him,” We have seen the Lord. But he said to them,” I did not think unless I see in his hands the level of the nails, and I place my thumb into the level of his fingers, and I place my hands into his part.” His followers were within once eight days later, and Thomas was there with them. Jesus appeared and said,” Peace become with you, even though the doors were locked,” as he stood among them. Then he said to Thomas,” Put your finger below, and see my arms, and put your hand out, and place it in my side.” Would not reject, but rather believe.” Thomas responded,” My Lord and my God”!

    John 20: 24-28 ( ESV )

They break my clothes among them, and they cast lots for my clothing.

    Psalm 22: 18 ( ESV )

And they cast thousands among them after they had crucified him, dividing his clothing among them.

    Matthew 27: 35 ( ESV )

Verse 22 is frequently referred to as a revelation of Jesus, which is accurate in some ways but not in others. Kurt Petersheim and Trey Bailey of Eastridge Church spoke with Luther Rice College and Convent teacher of Old Testament Dr. Joshua Stewart about this verse in a new episode of The After Church Podcast.

Petersheim continued,” In God’s autonomy that we can see the big picture being painted of something more happening than just the words that Jesus said or only perhaps what David wrote,” noting that” when he’s not thinking about the person of Jesus necessarily.”

Bailey after suggested to Stewart,” Let me make a speech, and you tell me if I’m right.” It would be suspicious that David is considering writing this because” I’m thinking about Jesus.”

Stewart responded,” I had undoubtedly suggest that.” ” I guess, like I said, this verse is, you know, reused in a certain way to emphasize the demise of Jesus and even the desire of the ascension,” the author said.

The death is still seen as Psalm 22’s fulfillment.

The words of this verse show that, as terrible as it is, everything was going according to plan, according to John Piper last season. Perhaps the worst of it was the realization of Scripture, according to the author. And that was perhaps the worst situation in human story. And the Bible was redeemed.

The most significant aspect of Jesus ‘ Psalm 22: 1 statement is that it demonstrates that no disciple should be concerned about God forsaking him or her.

By referring to this and the entire verse as a whole, Stewart said,” I’m going to practice this for you in such a way that no other child of God may actually experience this for themselves.”

He continued,” If we could get that portion of it where He is abandoned so that we would never be abandoned, He was forsaken so that we would never be forsaken.” No one ever needs to use these expressions afterwards.

Great Friday and Easter Sunday both have such beautiful themes. Allow that thought inspire your daily and daily devotion of Him.
