Thousands of people took to the streets in London and Edinburgh on Saturday to rally a recent UK supreme court ruling that constitutes a “woman” officially as one assigned women at conception.
Protesters, trade unions, and users of the LGBTQ+ area held demonstrations in support of transgender rights, waving colors and holding symptoms reading “trans women are women” and “trans privileges are human rights. ”
The decision, issued on Wednesday, has significant implications for single-sex areas and solutions such as restrooms, changing rooms, and hospital rooms. According to the judge, these companies “will work effectively only if sex is interpreted as biological gender. ”
Many in the transgender and non-binary society say the choice undermines their personality and increases their vulnerability.
In London, authorities reported that seven monuments near the opposition were vandalised, including one of feminist First Fawcett in Parliament Square.
Justice Patrick Hodge said he and four different courts ruled unanimously that “the words girl and sex in the Equality Act refer to a natural woman”. In the law, “the words ‘sex’, ‘woman’ and ‘man’ … mean ( and were always intended to mean ) biological sex, biological woman and biological man, ” the judges wrote.
The court’s decision followed a legal dispute between the British government and campaign team For Women Scotland ( FWS), which challenged Scotland’s view of the Equality Act. While the Scottish government argued that trans women with a Gender Recognition Certificate ( GRC ) should have equal protections, the court disagreed.
The team lost a decision in a British court in 2022 but was eventually granted permission to take its case to the supreme court, which held trials in November.
