Luigi Mangione was indicted on federal death claims in the firing of a UnitedHealth Group Inc. administrative, paving the way for U. S. lawyers to seek the death penalty against him.
Mangione’s national situation has now been assigned to a U. S. prosecutor, who will act on disputes in the case and monitor a trial. Mangione has individually been charged by New York state prosecutors with Brian Thompson’s death and awaits test.
Mangione, 26, is accused of shooting Thompson outside a motel in midtown Manhattan before fleeing and touching off a manhunt that ended with his imprisonment at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
The four-count accusation by a federal grand jury in New York Thursday mirrors the initial expenses in a legal complaint filed against Mangione in December. The charging document is a necessary step for national authorities to sue Mangione for Thompson’s death.
U. S. prosecutors said they would help the state prosecutors to resume first. No trial date has been set for the express event and Mangione has pleaded not guilty to the state fees, which could lead to a life sentence.
Karen Friedman Agnifilo, a prosecutor for Mangione, declined to comment.
The federal charges follow Mangione’s lawyers ’ charges that U. S. Attorney General Pam Bondi was seeking to politicize the now high-profile situation by seeking the demise penalty. The walk was trap federal prosecutors against the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
Bondi announced on April 1 that the U. S. may seek the death penalty against Mangione for committing “a premeditated, cold-blooded execution. ” Weeks later, Friedman Agnifilo asked a judge to stop the state from pursuing the death penalty, arguing the Justice Department had never offered “even a semblance of operation. ”
The firing of Thompson last month drew national attention because of the blatant nature of the crime and the nationwide manhunt that followed. Mangione reportedly waited outside a midtown Manhattan lodge before shooting Thompson, the chief executive of United Health’s plan device, with a 3D-printed ghost gun. UnitedHealth was hosting its investment day at the hotel, where Thompson was slated to respond.
When authorities arrested him in Altoona, Mangione was carrying a statement decrying the health-care business and a book discussing killing a CEO, officials said.
