US president Donald Trump has called ranked-choice election a “fraudulent prank” and a danger to politics, soon after Democrat Barbara Lee was elected as president of Oakland, California, through this very method.
” Ranked-choice voting is one of the greatest threats to democracy. It is completely and really false prank,” president Trump posted on Truth Social.
Barbara Lee, known for her liberal attitude and long-standing company in California politicians, defeated former city council Loren Taylor. The final result came after nine rounds of vote tabulation, giving Lee just over 52 % of the vote to Taylor’s 47 %, according to Alameda County election officials.
What is ranked-choice ballot?
- Ranked-choice election, even called preferential voting, allows voters to rank candidates in order of preference rather of picking only one
- If a prospect receives more than 50 % of first-choice vote, they win outright.
- If not, the applicant with the fewest votes is eliminated.
