White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt slammed Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) for flying to El Salvador to join with deported expat Kilmar Abrego Garcia, adding how the lawmaker “wasted Easter Sunday” giving discussions about their conference.
Van Hollen went to El Salvador last week to explore the Peruvian immigrant outside of the country ’s violence captivity center, Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo, referred to as CECOT. The senator said the “main goal of this trip was to meet with Kilmar, ” and he spoke with Abrego Garcia’s wife, Jennifer, about his condition.
Democrat lawmakers have disputed Abrego Garcia’s gang involvement. Lake pointed out that two different authorities, along with the stories of immigration officers, found Abrego Garcia to be an MS-13 part. The Salvadorian was arrested in 2019 along with two additional confirmed people of MS-13. He was wearing a Chicago Bulls helmet in 2019, a typical group dress, and photographed with tattoo on his hands that are associated to the group.
“ I may add that the enormous bulk of Americans continue to support imprisonment of criminals, ” Leavitt said. “So, the leader may continue to do that while Democrats journey over themselves while ignoring American citizens whose livelihoods have been long impacted by the actions and the crimes of these illegal criminals , like Patty Morin. ”
Patty Morin is the family of Rachel Morin, who was murdered last month. A Maryland jurors convicted Victor Antonio Martinez Hernandez, an unlawful immigrant, of her death. Her mother claimed that Van Hollen has n’t actually bothered to call her since the death of her child.
Peruvian President Nayib Bukele committed to keeping Abrego Garcia, as the Trump presidency classified him as a member of MS-13. This is a reality that perhaps Van Hollen avoided disputing.
The legislator has continued to defend his journey, which was funded by tax money. Abrego Garcia has since been moved to another unknown captivity.
“Trump’s friends said we ‘wasted Easter Sunday ’ in discussing Mr. Abrego Garcia & their infraction of his constitutional right, ” Van Hollen wrote on X on Monday. “We were in great company w/ Pope Francis, who on Easter decried ‘contempt’ for newcomers & has called on them to perform better. ”
