In a significant reversal of former President Joe Biden’s administration, President Donald Trump’s Department of Education announced on Monday that the Office of Federal Student Aid ( FSA ) will resume accepting student loan payments next month.

Following a student loan repayment pause that was issued in March of 2020 during the COVID-19 epidemic, the U.S. Department of Education confirmed in a Monday press release that student loan payment will resume on May 5.

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon stated that” British citizens will no longer be required to offer as collateral for reckless student borrowing policies.” The executive branch does not have the legal power to eliminate debt, nor do mortgage balances disappear as a result, according to the Biden Administration. The citizens have now received hundreds of billions.

McMahon claimed that the Department of Education and the Treasury will” sheep the student loan program properly and according to the law” by assisting thousands of student loans in restarting their loans “both for the sake of their personal financial health and our nation’s economic outlook.”

About 42.7 million borrowers presently owe over$ 1.6 trillion in student loan to the federal government, according to the press release from Monday. Through different student loan forgiveness programs, the Biden administration “punched the federal student loan collection toward a governmental cliff,” according to the Department of Education.

Over 5 million student loan lenders have not made a regular payment for around 360 days, according to the Department of Education, while 4 million consumers are now” lay in default” and are in “late-stage delinquency” on Monday. The office issued a warning that nearly 10 million borrowers might mistake over the upcoming weeks.

Also, the Department of Education reported that only 38 % of student loan lenders are “in payment and present” with their student loan payments.

The Department of Education stated that the Office of Federal Student Aid will conduct a powerful communications campaign to persuade all borrowers about the value of repayment over the next two months. Through emails and social media, FASA does contact borrowers to let them know about their obligations and provide resources and support to help them choose the best payment plan.

The office added that the FASA intends to engage its partners in this campaign to promote commonsense and fairness by requiring student and parent borrowers to pay back their student loans. These include states, higher education institutions, financial aid administrators, colleges access and success organizations, third-party service providers, and other stakeholders. There won’t be any compassion for large loans.
