Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA ) made a sharp critique of immigration policies and the rhetoric that surround them during a Tuesday show on ABC’s The View, drawing a provocative analogy between Kilmar Abrego Garcia and the biblical figure Jesus.
Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant and alleged MS-13 part, was falsely deported to El Salvador last month, according to Warnock, who serves both as a senator and senior pastor of the ancient Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta.
Cohost Sunny Hostin told Warnock,” You have warned that right now in this region, people are trying to destroy despair.”
Without any apparent lack of due process, we are seeing refugees being sent to a famous unusual prison. We sent Kilmar Abrego Garcia there because of an operational error, and the government today claims we didn’t get him back. What do you think about this nation welcoming outsiders? Hostin emailed the priest, describing the incident as an indictment of how the country treated workers.
Warnock responded,” I am a Matthew 25 Christian,” making reference to the Bible poetry about showing compassion for neighbors and the underprivileged.
The way you treat the people who live on the margins, according to Jesus, is the acid test of your faith, and a lot of it seems to be based on violence, he continued.
Warnock also criticized those who, in his opinion, support tough immigration plans while upholding Christian beliefs.
He said,” I think Jesus is the biggest victim of identity theft in this state,” and the studio audience applauded him. ” I don’t know who this Jesus is they’re talking about,” they say. The Jesus I know was raised in a slum called Nazareth and was born in a town called Bethlehem. He was a seized refugee into Egypt, Warnock continued.
The president’s remarks come as immigration policy in the United States continues to be seriously divided. The imprisonment and subsequent detention of Abego Garcia in El Salvador’s infamous Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo have drawn condemnation from other Democrats.
While Warnock’s comments were well-liked by some viewers, some Christians have argued that the portrayal of Jesus as an expatriate is historically false, noting that the Roman Empire’s flight to Egypt was a temporary shelter from danger and not a result of global migration.
The recent immigration debate is framed by Warnock as a component of a larger national crisis, both legal and spiritual.
He said,” Our country is going through what I call a kind of spirit weariness.” We have endured years of pandemic, decades of war, and a current wave of political tyrannies who “drive divisions out of fear” ( poetry ).

Officials who can tell us of who we are when we stand up are what we need, Warnock continued. I also think this nation is right.
In response to lawmakers ‘ increasing attention of Abrego Garcia’s situation, Warnock’s remarks come at a time when. Last year, Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) visited El Salvador to look into the circumstances surrounding his arrest. Reps. Maxwell Frost (D-FL ), Robert Garcia (D-CA ), Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ), and Maxine Dexter (D-OR ), who are asking for answers regarding Abrego Garcia’s legal status and treatment, joined Van Hollen this week.
