The Trump presidency had until May 1 for the release of Tufts University student Rümeysa ztürk from Louisiana to Vermont, according to a national judge‘s order on Thursday. The state is trying to arrest her because she is alleged to have engaged in “activities in support of Hamas.”
As a result of the president’s appeal, U.S. District Judge William K. Sessions halted the transport after the government moved to the position where her detainment was disputed.
Homeland Security personnel detained ztürk on March 25 in Somerville, Massachusetts, a Boston district. A video of the incident, in which police officials detained her, went viral. After writing an op-ed calling Tufts to “acknowledge the Arab murder” and divests from businesses tied to Israel, she was accused of engaging in “in actions in support of Hamas.”
The president’s attempt to halt her transport were slammed by Brett Max Kaufman, a top team attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, which represents ztürk.
The government has been detaining Ms. ztürk for four days because she wrote an opinion piece, Kaufman said in a statement. And today, it is doing everything in its power to avoid having to defend what it has done, including attempting to appeal the court’s hail-mary ruling.
The president’s demand to halt the judge’s earlier order was opposed by Ozturk’s attorneys.  ,
In court filings, Ms. ztürk’s attorneys wrote that “only one party may experience any injury from a remain, and that damage is irreparable.” In contrast, keeping Ms. ztürk in incarceration in Vermont and being forced to defend her extended detention, the authorities suffers no harm at all.
Any delay in ztürk’s transfer, according to the judge, was “prolong the pretty detention that is at the center of this case.”
Her condition may be improved as a result of ztürk’s relocation to Vermont. Louisiana’s detention facilities have been accused of violating human rights, and the place is viewed as being more “hostile” to immigration cases.
