Even though Trump claims to have spoken with the Taiwanese president “many days,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent revealed on Sunday that he is not conscious of any new business deals between the two.
” I’m not sure if President Trump has spoken with President Xi.” I am aware that they have a very positive connection and a lot of regard for one another, but again, I believe that the Chinese will realize that their business model is unsustainable due to their high tariffs,” Bessent said on ABC News’ This Week.
Bessent did state that he spoke with his Chinese rival at the International Monetary Fund and World Bank sessions last week in Washington, D.C., despite not having any interactions with them.
I spoke with my Taiwanese counterpart, but it was more about the standard factors, such as financial stability and early global economic warnings. I’m not sure if President Trump has spoken with Xi, he continued.
Trump revealed that he was speaking with Xi shortly before the trip, but he declined to provide more information about the exchanges as he waited for a business deal. China, by contrast, insists that no such discussions took place.
When questioned on Sunday about China’s refusal to hold conversations, Bessent responded,” I think they’re catering to a different market.

Following Trump’s” Liberation Day” news in early April, China and the United States are at odds with one another regarding tariffs. The majority of those so-called mutual taxes have been stopped, but China’s charges continue and are now levied at a rough 145 % rate.
Bessent argued that Chinese leaders are aware that these costs are “unsustainable” and will be forced to communicate.
