Gov. On Thursday, Colorado Governor Jared Polis (D-Colo. ) signed a legislation prohibiting the production of some automatic weapons and forbidring Colorado people from purchasing them without a permit and training.
SB25-003, in the new legislation’s simplest form, forbids the production, sales, and acquisition of” specified automatic firearms.” A automatic rifle or semiautomatic pistol with a retractable journal, or a gas-operated semiautomatic handgun with a detachable magazine, are “defined by the law as a” specified semiautomatic firearm” according to the policy.
A person does not intentionally manufacture, distribute, transport, sell, or purchase a specified semiautomatic rifle to an adult staying in another state or to a federally licensed firearm dealer.
In August of 2026, the laws will begin to prevent the manufacture, sales, and buy of semiautomatic firearms with movable ammunition magazines, according to a media release from the Colorado House Democrats.
AR-15 firearms, AK-47 rifles, military shotguns, and a select few handguns will all be prohibited under the new legislation, according to The Colorado Sun. The store pointed out that the prohibited arms under the new law would only be able to be purchased if the ammunition magazines were permanently attached to the arms and couldn’t hold more than 15 sessions.
The Colorado Sun reports that the state’s new firearms legislation may even outlaw knock stocks, which allow automatic weapons to fire at a comparable rate to automatic weapons.
Prior to signing the bill last week, Polis stated that, in accordance with The Colorado Sun,” I actually think this will produce Colorado safer.”
The prohibited weapon will still be permitted for use by law enforcement, armoured car companies, and correctional officials throughout the state, according to The Post Millennial. The outlet also noted that semiautomatic firearm repair may be permitted for revolvers.
People of Colorado will also be able to apply for a “firearms health training registration card,” according to The Post Millennial. A background check conducted by state officers, who will determine a person’s ability protection risk, may be required of residents.
The Post Millennial claims that a citizen must complete a training program and complete a written test if they are approved for a “firearms health training registration card.”
