This weekend, Vancouver was rocked by horror as it marked Lapu Lapu Day, a day dedicated to honoring the Filipino national warrior who bravely fought against Spanish colonization.
At least 11 people were killed and lots more were hurt in a car-ramming incident, casting a shadow over what was supposed to be a joyful celebration.
What is Lapu Lapu day?
Lapu Lapu, the ruler of the Mactan Island, is credited with winning the Hispanic expedition led by Ferdinand Magellan, a Portuguese explorer, in 1521. He commanded his soldiers to fight the Spanish mission. Lapu Lapu is hailed as a national hero, the Gaurdian reported, and the success is presently a symbol of courage and opposition against invasion.
In recognition of the Filipino person’s efforts to the province’s cultural history, British Columbia declared April 27 Lapu Lapu Day in honor of the province’s founding in 2023. The celebrations in Vancouver, which attracted thousands, were meant to catch Filipino culture’s pleasure, history, and vitality. Music, parades, ethnic dances, baseball games, and a show of Filipino cuisine and homemade goods were the highlights of the celebration.

In the Philippines, April 27 is also known as Lapu Lapu Day. A month-long festival on Mactan Island, Lapu-Lapu City, features parades, business booths, and reenactments of the Battle of Mactan.
Prior to the assault, the Vancouver march had been sparked by a love and value for Lapu Lapu’s factor to Filipino identity and resistance. The event, according to organizers, “embodied the heart of local resistance” and demonstrated how united nations are in keeping cultural heritage.
