The Metals Company ( TMC) of Canada announced on Tuesday that it had submitted an application to the US for deep-sea mineral mining in international waters. This is the first implementation of this nature that President Donald Trump has supported.
According to AFP, the metals targeted by TMC are essential for the production of electric vehicle chargers and cables. Climate groups have, nevertheless, expressed concerns about the potential biological effects of extracting these tools.
The Metals Company’s company TMC USA is requesting a permit to mine ferruginous clusters, multi-metal debris found in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean.
The Metals Company’s chairman and CEO, Gerard Barron, described the move as” a significant step forward for America’s material independence and professional revival.”
The International Seabed Authority ( ISA ) initially approved the company’s application, but it abandoned because of delays in the ISA’s development of mining regulations. President Trump issued an executive get shortly after to accede to the review of mine permits, including those for international waters.
Economic organizations, including Greenpeace, have criticized the app, claiming that deep-sea mine could damage fragile communities.
