More than 72, 000 deaths and kidnappings have been recorded along migratory routes around the world in the last ten years, the most of which have occurred in crisis-affected regions, according to the United Nations on Tuesday.
According to the International Organization for Migration ( IOM), there were at least 8, 938 migrant deaths per year, which is the highest migrant death toll on record.
These figures serve as a tragic reminder that persons risk their lives when they are left without safe or viable options at home due to vulnerability, lack of opportunity, and another pressures, according to IOM key Amy Pope, in a statement.
According to the statement from her UN company, almost three-quarters of all immigrant deaths and kidnappings recorded globally since 2014 were caused by people fleeing uncertainty, turmoil, crisis, and various humanitarian crises.
According to the IOM’s Missing Migrants document, one in four were “from nations affected by humanitarian crises, with the deaths of thousands of Afghans, Rohingya, and Syria documented on migration pathways worldwide.”
More than 52, 000 people died trying to flee one of the 40 nations in the world where there is a UN crisis response plan or charitable response plan, according to the document.
Pope urged international funding to” create balance and opportunity within communities, but that movement is a decision, not a necessity.” ” And when sleeping is no longer achievable, we must work together to create safe, legal, and orderly processes that protect life.”
Almost 25 000 people have lost their lives at sea in the Central Mediterranean over the past ten years, according to IOM, making it the deadliest movement path in the world. According to the record, more than 12, 000 of those who had left Libya after the war had disappeared at sea, and many others had vanished while they were transiting the Sahara Desert.
In the past ten years, more than 5, 000 people have died trying to leave Afghanistan’s devastated country, many of whom have come back to life after the Taliban resurrected in 2021.
In addition, over 3,100 people of Myanmar’s tortured Rohingya minority died during the time, many of whom were killed in disasters or while crossing into Bangladesh.
Julia Black, the representative of the IOM’s Missing Migrants Project and the author of the report, warned that” too frequently, workers fall through the cracks.”
” And according to data cracks, especially in war zones and crisis areas,” she said in the speech.” The real death toll is likely much higher than what we’ve recorded.
