UNRWA, the UN company for Palestinian refugees, reported on Tuesday that more than 50 of its employees in Gaza were abused and used as animal weapons while being held by Israeli forces in the country.
Over 50 UNRWA employees, including educators, specialists, social workers, have been detained and abused since the start of the conflict in October 2023, according to UNRWA director Philippe Lazzarini, on X.
They have been treated in the most egregious and cruel manner. They claimed to have been beaten and used as animal spears.
Lazzarini cited the testimony of one of the team members who had been held hostage by the Israeli government before being free.
The team member was quoted as saying,” I wished for death to stop this problem I was living through.”
They “received this abominable evidence from a partner who was arrested in Gaza, mistreated while being held by Israeli authorities, and eventually released,” they continued.
According to Lazzarini, those detained have been subjected to” sleep deprivation, shame, threats of harm to therm&, their families, and attacks by puppies.”
” Many were forced to make statements. This is nothing short of terrifying and, even more outrageous.
The allegation was not immediately addressed by the military.
After accusing some of its employees of participating in Hamas ‘ October 7, 2023 assault that sparked the Gaza war, Israel has forbid UNRWA from conducting operations there.
According to separate examinations, it has not provided supporting information for its claim.
More than 50 times into its full blockade of assistance to Gaza, the International Court of Justice is now hearing testimony from dozens of countries and organizations in order to prepare a supposedly expert opinion on Israel’s charitable obligations to Palestinians.
Israel is refusing to attend the Judge, but it quickly retaliates, calling the hearings “part of the country’s systematic persecution and delegitimization.”
Gideon Saar, the foreign minister of Israel, stated on Sunday that the sessions were “part of a comprehensive persecution and delegitimization of Israel.”
” It is not Israel that ought to be tried.” It is UNRWA and the UN, he claimed.
