BEIJING: According to reports from Radio Free Asia ( RFA ), dozens of regular Chinese investors who lost their investments following the demise of a government-supported financial services company in Shandong province have been detained by the authorities for spreading the word about the situation through international media and for being “exploited by overseas anti-China elements.”
According to RFA, several investors spoke with international media outlets, including RFA, last month to help bring attention to the scandal and encourage action. Among the nearly 100, 000 people affected by an alleged 20 billion yuan ( approximately USD 2.74 billion ) financial fraud connected to the Jianghaihui Group in Shandong province.
As per the RFA report, Chinese officials have detained many investors who claim they are “being exploited by abroad anti-China elements” after speaking to reporters and sharing articles about the controversy with social media outlets or personally.
Over a hundred lenders from various towns in Shandong province, including Weifang and Zaozhuang, have recently been subjected to operational detention by local law enforcement, according to the RFA record.
RFA reported in late March that Jianghaihui’s president had fled to the United States with his partner after the business abruptly stopped operating, leaving behind numerous depressed investors who had put their savings into the financial schemes of the business.
According to the RFA record, officials have repeatedly called investors in for questioning, and they have been subject to detention and constant monitoring for sharing info with foreign journalists.
Using information shared on significant international websites, law enforcement detained more than a few people. People from various counties were also involved in the communication of the information. The Public Security Bureau authorities presented the reports to me, and they referred to them as being in opposition to China, according to RFA.
According to the RFA report, the majority of those detained are people, some of whom were released two weeks ago, and a significant number of others are still being detained.
