What Does Russia Want?

Since February 2022, Russia has been engaged in a vicious war to destroy Ukraine. Russian troops initially appeared to be on a roll: they were only a few kilometers away from Kyiv, and European powers offered President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s departure. When Selenskyy objected, Ukrainian troops moved in to stop and change the Russian offensive. Within a few weeks, the conflict grew stronger, with Russia still occupying a large portion of the East and Crimea they had held since 2014. The only thing that could be done was the obvious answer: an armistice that would effectively freeze the borders of conflict and provide Ukraine with adequate security guarantees to stop a new Russian attack.

But there was no way to solve it. After mid-2022, Russia showed little interest in a brokered resolution to the conflict.

President Donald Trump pledged to put an end to the combat, which has resulted in at least 50 000 Ukrainian casualties and up to 200 000 Russian casualties. In order to accomplish that, he pressed Zelenskyy to agree. In the end, Selenskyy delivered a 30-day absolute peace. And the answer is astonishingly straightforward: Russia wants to conquer Ukraine, establish a puppet government, or establish a clear path to annex Ukraine.
