Lecturer supports the “anti-capitalist” method of budgeting.
A financial mentor said in a new lecture at Iowa State University that capitalism is an “oppressive program” that is “incredibly difficult to survive.”
Leo Aquino, a “non-binary Filipinx author, columnist, and economic manager,” was featured in the “anti-capitalism personal finance presentation” and was recognized for” their devotion to uplifting BIPOC and LGBTQ+ stories,” according to the event description.
Aquino argued in the presentation that gay and transgender people should be more important than income when it comes to an “anti-capitalist” budgeting strategy.
The speaker referred to anti-capitalism as” the idea that economic systems do not need to subscribe to bourgeois values for us to endure.”
Workers ‘ ability to control their labor and decide how earnings are invested is supported by an anti-capitalist personal finance standpoint. According to Aquino, it requires individuals to reinterpret their “definition of wealth.”
The speaker urged students to quit blaming themselves for their economic circumstances and begin to question the foundational structure.
Aquino defined socialism as” an economic method where workers are required to sell [their ] work for a salary in order to live.”
According to the financial trainer, this method causes burnout, depression, and anxiety by placing profits before people. Capital is an oppressive system that benefits from our inadvertent financial literacy and social financial conflict.
Additionally, to “persuade” issue, capitalism “needs prejudice, discrimination, bigotry, imperialism, and other forms of oppression.” Aquino claimed that it has made members of marginalized communities to perform unreal things to live in an oppressive system.
The speaker compared anti-capitalist budgeting, which is defined as a “neutral space for us to exercise sympathetic data analysis,” to traditional budgeting, which is a regular estimate of income and expenses.
Aquino argued that the goal is to “help another save, resources, and spend money in accordance with their values” rather than” to make the rich richer.”
The economic coach also outlined a number of different ways to budget, each based on a person’s individual financial aptitude. Using a “needs vs. wants” design was one effective method for budgeting. Aquino once said that” some items are needs and wants [at the same time]” and that “mental health requires things like beauty and dining up.”
People should not have to think too much about the economic repercussions of that habits when eating out with friends. This inner issue, according to the speaker, is brought on by an oppressive bourgeois economic system.
Aquino added that people don’t always want more money; instead, they want more freedom to do what they love and enjoy. He deeper described money as a tool for “navigating capitalism with more ease.”
Queer and transgender communities in certain gain the most from anti-capitalist finance movements. One-third of LGBTQ mothers are in poverty and unable to leave because of previous prejudice against their society, according to Aquino.
Young trans areas are “going into bill for gender-affirming care due to current legislation,” in contrast.
A student from ISU asked Aquino about how this type of financial planning counteracts capitalism, saying,” You can only do so much.” While still residing in a bourgeois system, everyone must be willing to make concessions.
The coach urged people to continue to support” the changes” they desired in the financial world.
Aquino said,” It is more about coping than weight.”
According to its website, Aquino is the owner of Queer and Trans Wealth, a fiscal coaching and education company “dedicated to enhancing the financial education and economic independence of gay and trans communities.”
The College Fix contacted Aquino and the school next month via email for more information about the presentation and its topics, but they were unsuccessful in getting a response.
Aquino’s site lists a number of individual works, including” How to donate your gender-affirming surgery,”” How to promote your pronouns,” and” How to make your own video.”
