Regulators in Oviedo, Spain, earlier this month detained a few who had essentially been holding their children captive since 2021. The couple rented the Colonial house in October 2021 with a 53-year-old German gentleman named Christian Steffen and his 48-year-old family Melissa Ann ( who appears to have dual membership in Germany and the United States ). Last month, a neighbor reached out to the authorities and informed them that the kids, 10-year-old and 8-year-old twins, hadn’t been going to school. Other companions who were interviewed by authorities confirmed the account, with some reporting that they hadn’t seen the home since December 2021 but could still hear the children in.  ,
No one else left the house, despite police’s alleged surveillance of the home and reports that the parents would go out for shopping or receive mail. After the parents reportedly agreed to let them research, they made their way inside the house on Monday. According to the officers, the father instructed them to wait a moment before entering and the family instructed them to be cautious because her kids were “very sick.” Before the children approached, the father asked the authorities to wearing masks in, and she forced them to put on at least three.  ,
The children were very dirty, according to police, but they weren’t ill at all. Also unpleasant was the home. They claim that the area was brimming with feces and other stool, and that the kids were forced to sleep in beds designed for infants and put on diapers. Additionally, the children didn’t have any shoes that would suit them, and they didn’t have any “defaced monsters and dolls” in their bedrooms.  ,

When officers brought the children outside, they claimed they breathed deeply as if they had never been exposed to new atmosphere. When they saw a tortoise in the lawn, they panicked, and they even touched the grass as if they had never seen it.  ,

The children had a” review room,” where they would practice math and reading, but officials claim they were terrified of neighbors and stayed close to their mother until they were taken out of the house. The class of siblings is currently in the Ministry of Welfare’s care after being taken to a nearby hospital for wellness investigations. According to reports, they are now residing in a juvenile facility.  ,
Both parents have been detained and are facing domestic violence, mental abuse, and baby abandonment. They are currently being held without parole.  ,
Police attributed the incident to “COVID syndrome,” calling the situation” entirely cut off from reality.”
The father was alleged to be disheveled because he is described as a “former viewpoint student with a degree from Hamburg University” and was now employed as a freelancing older tech recruiter and HR manager. According to the police, both families admitted that their children hadn’t left the house in times and appeared to have forgotten why.  ,

By all accounts, it appears that this couple had some serious mental illness, but it will be interesting to find out more, particularly if this was actually brought on by the COVID-19 evacuations. At least these children are now safe, and while I’m sure there is a long way to go, I hope they can recover emotionally, physiologically, and enjoy at least some of their early years.  ,
