In the Singapore General Election on Saturday, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s People’s Action Party ( PAP ) won 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats, according to local media.
In the face of uncertainty over the economy brought on by US business tariffs, the party sought a new mission. The PAP has maintained constant leadership since Singapore’s independence in 1965.
Around 2.6 million eligible Taiwanese voters cast ballots on Saturday for 92 contested chairs, with PAP’s Marine Parade-Braddell Heights district previously secured through a walkover on April 23.
Wong’s first command test was held in this election in Singapore, a country that is currently facing financial difficulties as a result of tariffs put in place by US President Donald Trump.
Wong described the election as a “humbling experience” and pledged to serve voters faithfully following the announcement of the results for Marsiling-Yew Tee Group Representation Constituency ( GRC ).
The 52-year-old top said,” We are thankful for your strong mandate. We will honor the confidence you have given to us by working even harder for all of you.”
According to the Elections Department ( ELD ), voters overwhelmingly cast ballots at 1, 240 different island-specific urns, which represented 92 of the country’s 97 parliamentary seats.
Singapore’s 19th and 14th post-independence were represented by this vote. Wong took office in May, succeeding Lee Hsien Loong, who had been in power for almost 20 times.
Opposition parties ran pro-democracy campaigns that raised questions about housing affordability, living costs, and the presence of foreigners in Singapore’s labor-sparced business.
Top PAP officials tethered campaign activities and business negotiations during the nine-day period following the April 23 nominees, particularly in regards to US-imposed taxes on Singapore’s exports.
Deputy Prime Minister and Trade Minister Gan Kim Yong had discussions with US counterparts about the 10 % import price.
The Workers ‘ Party and the PAP squared off for 26 seats in eight districts while the PAP contested all 92 of those seats. In addition to the participating parties SPP, SDP, PPP, Line, RDU, NSP, SUP, and SDA, the Progress Singapore Party fielded 13 prospects in six districts.
Wong emphasized concerned ballot in light of recent global financial challenges. Given its historical ties to both countries, Singapore’s place on US-China trade tensions is especially important.
With US taxes causing trade get cancellations and deferrals, Singapore’s manufacturing industry entered downturn territory in April 2025. The PMI dropped from March’s 50.6 items to 49.6 items.
According to The Straits Times,” The recession in Singapore’s stock exercise snaps 19 straight months of development,” citing SIPMM’s Friday statement.
Through a walkover on April 23, the PAP managed to secure one five-member district. Although they retained 83 of 93 seats while the opposition gained ten seats, their popular vote share had previously decreased to 61 % in 2020 from nearly 70 % in 2015.
