The Carter Center and Emory University in Atlanta recently found that the majority of the Chinese community opposes using push to unite Taiwan and China.
According to the report titled” Sovereignty, Security, and US-China Relations: Chinese Public Opinion,” which was released on Wednesday, 55.1 % of respondents agreed or at least partially agreed that force should never be employed to resolve the Taiwan problem. In comparison, 24.5 % of people expressed strong or moderating disagreement with that opinion. When questioned about the possible coercive action to bring the island nation to unification as promised by Chinese leadership, the most frequently reacted was within five years ( 33.5 % ).
A surveys of Taiwanese public opinion on a variety of international relations problems in Asia was conducted by The Carter Center’s China Focus program in the middle of the summer of 2024 in collaboration with Emory University’s Department of Political Science university.
According to the survey, a larger group ( 69.6 % ) of Chinese people believe friendly and peaceful relations with America are necessary for China’s continued prosperity and economic growth, compared to less than a quarter ( 23.5 % ) of Chinese people.
These results point to a potential broader acceptance of a peaceful resolution to the current diplomatic tensions, as well as strong public support for partnerships, particularly Russia and Vladimir Putin, which could complicate any such efforts.
A sizable portion of the Chinese population ( 66.1 % ) thinks that Vladimir Putin will uphold China’s sovereignty and national interests, while a sizable portion ( 80 % ) thinks China should continue to support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While roughly 81.1 % of people think Southeast Asian nations if uphold China’s authority over the South China Sea,
The response to country-specific questions across Asia, in addition to it, shows extensive support for aggressive military actions as a key component of global relations, implying that a new cold war is on hold. Instead of wanting a full-fledged combat, the Chinese government believes that there is support for the action, which would be reflected in the country’s customary salami slicing strategies.
