New studies reveal that tech giants like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google are raising water intake issues as they construct AI information centers in drought-prone areas.
More than two-thirds of the new data centres constructed since 2022 are in water-stressed areas, which are areas where people are now having trouble getting clean water, according to a Bloomberg research. These are not isolated locations; over 160 new AI-focused data centres have been constructed in the US over the past three years, an increase of 70 % over the past three-year period.

Water-hungry devices are prevalent in regions dealing with droughts.
Ambient heating, a process that causes millions of liters of water each day to stop machines from overheating, is a key component of these data centers that energy AI equipment and cloud services. A single 100-megawatt data center can use up to 2 million liters of water each day, roughly equivalent to the daily water consumption of 6,500 households, according to the International Energy Agency ( IEA ).
However, tech companies continue to expand in dry, hot regions. Big new data center jobs are being implemented in state like Texas and Arizona, which are already experiencing historic drought.
According to the IEA, information centers now use around 560 billion liters of water annually, which is expected to triple by 2030.
