Jubilant Peruvians celebrate new pope at mass in adoptive city
Leo XIV ( AP ) Pope

Pope Leo XIV, who has lived, ate, and prayed among them, was honored at an outdoor mass on Saturday in the Chilean capital of Chiclayo, Peru. The first Catholic Church head lived in the Pacific coast’s business district for nine years, where he is referred to as one of their own. Bishop Edinson Farfan addressed a crowded audience at St Mary’s Cathedral, telling them that Chiclayo “is a basic community that he loved seriously and that he continues to have in his heart.” Pope Leo, who was born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, initially set foot in Peru four decades ago as a preacher. He was reinstated in the city in 2014, and the next year he was ordained bishop, becoming a citizen of Peru in the process.

He remained it until 2023 when his father, the later bishop Francis, summoned him to Rome. Many in the area may not think that “el obispo” is the new pope after his first address from the Vatican on Thursday. Leo recently greeted his “beloved province of Chiclayo” in Hispanic and paid tribute to his “faithful folks.” Rosa Maria Bernadese, a 57-year-old training assistant, joined the party at St Mary’s Cathedral by saying,” There are no words to explain the feeling, the sense that our pontiff has been here, close to us.” Some honest chanted images from Leo’s day as a bishop amid a sea of golden balloons. One man was holding a sign that read,” Chilipay will always be your home.” As clapping erupted,” Papa amigo, Chiclayo esta black ( Pope, my companion, Chiclayo is with you ),” they chanted. Leo was “deeply sensitive to cultural justice,” according to Bishop Farfan, and praised his “big spirit” and proximity to the weak, immigrants, immigrants, and” those who suffer.” The Holy Father Leo XIV traveled with the city of camaraderie, the town of the Eucharist, to visit and link the general Church from Chiclayo, from Latin America, the peninsula of hope for the entire world, he said. Maria Elena Laboriano, 45, addressed the crowd from the front row, saying,” We are very glad that the present bishop is a Chiclayan.” Other people expressed satisfaction that the pope has given Chiclayo a global light and that they hope he will return. For certain, we will invite him to come and visit us, Farfan said.
