Due to the “rapid” spread of a dangerous predatory parasite known as the New World screwworm travel, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins announced the immediate expulsion of all animals, horse, and buffalo imports from Mexico.

Rollins claimed in a media release on Sunday that the Agriculture Department and U.S. Customs and Border Protection will presently impose a month-to-month ban on live animal imports from Mexico to prevent the “unacceptable” northward advance of the journey. Despite expensive work from both countries to remove the bug, the insect, which feeds on the cells of animals, has recently been discovered in Hispanic farms about 700 kilometers away from the U.S. southern boundary.

Rollins emphasized that the decision was made to safeguard the United States ‘ foods source, which she described as being of the “utmost value” for national protection.

” A national security issue of the greatest value is the safety of our country’s food supply and the safety of our creatures.” We will continue to open the frontier for the cattle trade once we see increased security and destruction efforts and the positive outcomes of those efforts, the agribusiness secretary said in a separate statement.

But, Mexican authorities reacted to the decision.

Mexican Agriculture Secretary Julio Berdegue stated on X:” We don’t agree with this measure, but we’re comfortable we’ll reach an agreement sooner rather than later. I’ll keep you informed.

Rollins argued that the department’s actions concerned “food and bird protection” rather than “politics or punishment of Mexico.”
