Ukrainian president welcomes Russian overtures, but says ceasefire must come before peace talks

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, says he is pleased to see that Russia is ultimately pursuing a resolution to end the conflict, but a stalemate must be in place before peace deals can begin. He called it a “positive mark,” saying on X Sunday that” the entire world has been waiting for this for a very long time. A peace is the first step in ending any conflict, right? ” It is pointless to keep shooting, even for a time.” We anticipate that Russia will ensure a whole, assured ceasefire starting tomorrow, May 12th, and that Ukraine will be prepared to meet, Zelenskyy said, appearing to rely on the suggestion. Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, successfully rejected that ceasefire offer in overnight remarks to the media and suggested resuming direct negotiations with Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15 rather “without conditions.”

He claimed that during the negotiations, a peace may be reached. Putin’s counteroffer came after officials from four important Western nations threatened to put more strain on Moscow if it refused to accept an unequivocal 30-day peace that they offered on Saturday in a show of force of unification with Kyiv.
