A partnership of 20 Democrat attorneys common filed two lawsuits on Tuesday to challenge the president’s demand that says abide by its strict immigration laws. The lawsuits were brought in federal judge in Rhode Island under the direction of California attorney general Rob Bonta. They accuse US President Donald Trump of trying to coerce states into adhering to its immigration plan by tying adherence to important funds designated for disaster relief, transportation, and emergency preparedness. The complaints are brought by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, who allege they broke the Constitution by threatening to withdraw funds that were allocated by Congress, according to CBS News. At a press conference earlier this year, states were warned that failing to support national immigration police or to continue upholding diversity, equity, and participation plans could lead to a loss of revenue. Duffy sent one more notice dated April 24 as Newark airport encountered serious technical problems. Attorney General of New Jersey, Matthew Platkin, praised Secretary Duffy for doing his “absolute work,” which is ensuring planes land on time. According to Reuters, the complaints allege that the administration is trying to overthrow Congress’s authority to regulate national spending. The decision, according to New York attorney general Letitia James, “holds states prisoner by forcing them to choose between disaster planning and enabling the president’s outlawed and turbulent immigration agenda.” In her email, homeland security director Kristi Noem defended the government’s position, saying that “if any government entity chooses to criticize the section of land security’s national safety and public security mission, it should not receive even a single penny of the department’s money unless Congress has particularly requested it.” According to Michigan AG Dana Nessel,” These funds are intended to restore aging roads and bridges, strengthen public health, and maintain law enforcement has the tools they need to work immediately in emergencies.” The Trump presidency is “undoubtedly prioritizing social posturing” over the security and well-being of Americans, according to Rhode Island AG Peter Neronha, who in a statement accused the Democrat attorneys general of political theater and said,” Americans would all be better off if these Democrat attorneys public focused on prosecuting criminals… rather than playing social games.”
