President Donald Trump warned on Thursday that “nothing will happen” in the Ukraine-Russian peace negotiations until he spoke with Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader.
The Kremlin confirmed that it would be sending a group led by Vladimir Medinsky, a Putin secretary, and three other Soviet leaders in place of a group led by Putin, on Thursday in Istanbul, Turkey, after Putin had first suggested restarting immediate peace talks with Ukraine and had been challenged by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet in person.
Trump reportedly stated on Thursday that he would not be attending the Istanbul peace talks between Russia and Ukraine this week due to timing issues. Trump also refuted Putin’s request to meet, suggesting that the Russian president would never enter the peace deals unless Trump had made plans to participate in the negotiations.

By a writer on Air Force One on Thursday, Trump asked if he was “disappointed in the level of the group that the Russians sent to Turkey.” He responded,” I don’t hear anything about it.

Following pressure from Russian supporters, including Britain, France, and Germany, forcing Russia to accept a peace plan or face additional punishment, Putin suggested that Russia and Ukraine hold a meeting to resume direct peace deals between the two countries. Instead of agreeing to a ceasefire, Putin had demanded that talks be conducted “without any preconditions.”
Zelensky addressed Putin’s decision to not participate in the Istanbul peace talks in a post on X, formerly Twitter, saying,” Russia once more demonstrated that it does not intend to end the war, having sent a delegation of rather low-level representatives.” Additionally, a Russian response to the situation and all of its partners is a sign of disrespect.
