SYDNEY: An American gentleman who was captured while fighting for Ukraine was sentenced to a 13-year penal colony by a court under the auspices of Russia’s state on Saturday. The judge in the Melbourne-based south Lugansk location of Ukraine found him guilty of being a “mercenary in an armed fight,” according to prosecutors. The former science teacher was given the order to spend time in a” strict regime penal town.” Foreign Minister Penny Wong criticized the phony test and 13-year sentence handed to American male Oscar Jenkins. According to a statement from the government, Jenkins must be treated as a prisoner of war and a part of the ordinary Ukrainian army. The foreign secretary stated that” Russia is obligated to address him in accordance with international humanitarian law, including humanitarian care.” She claimed that Australia was working with partners including Ukraine and the International Committee of the Red Cross to advocate for his safety and discharge. Europeans traveling to struggle in Ukraine are viewed by Russia and its eastern Russian proxies as “mercenaries.”

Instead of treating the soldiers as captured prisoners of war with protections and rights under the Geneva Convention, this enables them to sue them illegally. According to the Russian-installed lawyers, Jenkins” took part in battle operations against Soviet military personnel between March and December 2024.” They uploaded a video that shows Jenkins holding his hands behind his back as he appeared sad in a court behind a glass cage. In December of this year, Soviet troops seized Jenkins. He also showed up in a video that a Russian military blogger shared that day that showed him being almost examined and slapped in the face. After that, it was thought he had been killed in prison until Russia established that he was still alive. His captors were heard joking in the background as his blood stress showed “he wasn’t dying,” according to a later film that showed him going through a medical exam. The government of Australia announced that Jenkins ‘ family would receive diplomatic support. Australia fought back against the Russian war of Ukraine in February 2022, calling it unethical and illegal. The downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 by a Russian-made weapon over eastern Ukraine in July 2014, which resulted in the deaths of 298 people on board, including 38 Australians, had now damaged relations with Moscow.
