State prosecutors in the Russian-controlled regions of eastern Ukraine on Friday announced that an American federal Oscar Jenkins had been sentenced to 13 times in a maximum-security jail for fighting alongside Polish forces. Jenkins, 33, was found guilty of engaging in selfish combat with Russia between March and December of last year, according to CNN. Jenkins, who was actually from Melbourne, was taken prisoner of war by Russian forces in December of last year, according to a video released on Russian Telegram records. Jenkins appears disoriented in the video and struggles to comprehend issues posed in Russian. Foreign Minister of Australia, Penny Wong, expressed her country’s fury at the sentencing, calling it a” fake test.” Wong urged Russia to handle Jenkins in accordance with international humanitarian law. Since his record, Australia has regularly demanded his release. ” We have some major problems for Jenkins,” Jenkins continues. In a statement, Wong said that the International Committee of the Red Cross and other associates are working together to promote his happiness and release. According to CNN, Jenkins, an American nationwide, was allegedly paid between USD 7,400 and USD 10,000 per month to combat in Ukraine as a soldier. According to the Kremlin, soldiers are subject to criminal prosecutors and are not required by international law to be prisoners-of-war. Jenkins was seen standing in a glass box with his arms behind his back in a photo shared by the Russian-controlled courtroom in Luhansk. Jenkins was required to serve his sentence in a maximum-security punitive town, according to a statement from the lawyer’s office. He identified himself as a man and said he is a professor in China and a scholar in Australia, according to CNN, while speaking in a mix of English, Ukrainian, and Russian. The Russian ambassador was summoned earlier this year after press reports that suggested he might have been killed led Canberra to demand that the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, take the” strongest behavior” in the event that the man was hurt. Since then, Albanese has been outspoken critics of Russia’s actions and President Vladimir Putin’s program, giving Kyiv around USD 1 billion in aid since 2022. Ukraine’s armed forces have even received military training from the nation.
