According to the New York Post, US Senator Chuck Schumer claimed that the Department of Government Efficiency‘s ( DOGE ) recent budget and staffing cuts to the US Coast Guard may have contributed to the deadly collision involving a Mexican tall ship that crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge. Schumer cited what he called the Trump administration‘s interference in the US Coast Guard‘s function and said the effects of these changes needed an immediate investigation. We need to understand how the Trump administration‘s involvement in the USCG personnel may have affected the events that occurred last night, he said in a media release. He even raised questions about the Vehicle Traffic System of the Coast Guard, comparing it to a “FAA-like traffic power activity.” According to Schumer, this program might not have been “fully or sufficiently practical in light of a hiring freeze.” There haven’t been any reports of any other warships being involved in the fall, which took place on Saturday evening. If this were the case, the Brooklyn Bridge injury would be a federal harbinger, demanding urgent attention. Due to a structural malfunction, the Mexican army training deliver Cuauhtémoc lost steering and was therefore susceptible to the East River’s currents. The ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, causing the injury of at least 17 others and the death of two army recruits. The incident was quickly resolved by the Coast Guard. DoGE, which was founded by billionaire Elon Musk and was established earlier this year by Trump, has significantly reduced funding and staffing levels across numerous organizations, including the Coast Guard. Schumer has been under fire for supporting a Trump-backed resources and avoiding inquiries about previous President Joe Biden‘s mental health during his expression. He has been subject to criticism for his latest political views and ballot numbers. The Cuauhtémoc, a roughly 300-foot training send for the Mexican navy and carrying 277 individuals, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday at 8:30 pm. The 147-foot sails of the ship slammed into the tower’s roadway and broke. During the effect, two seamen were apparently trapped atop the tower. According to the NYPD, the occurrence produced chaos, with 23 people injured and two dead. Witnesses described chaotic scenes where seamen dangled from the rigging, some of whom were saved after hanging for more than 15 hours. The ship was getting ready to travel to Iceland on a benevolence trip from New York. Although the Brooklyn Bridge, which is 142 years old, was quickly closed for evaluation, there was no significant structural damage. The ship persisted under the gate until a speedboat intervened to keep it in place. The Cuauhtémoc’s tower is about 160 feet tall, but the bridge has only 127 ft of large sea certification.
