TAIPEI: The chairman of Taiwan declared on Tuesday that industry tensions between the United States and Taiwan are “frictions between buddies,” in a sign of optimism as tax negotiations with Washington are raging. As part of sweeping duties levied against all US trading partners last month, US President Donald Trump imposed 32 % taxes on all imports from Taiwan. To facilitate trade negotiations, Japanese goods were later reduced to 10 % for 90 days. Last month, in Taipei, the region’s money, leaders from both sides held a first round of in-person discussions, which will follow another one in the coming months. Despite the pressure from US tariffs and Chinese military threats, Lai Ching-te struck an accommodating voice in a statement recognizing his first year as chairman and focusing on Taiwan’s techniques to alleviate the effects of the tariffs. He claimed that the US and Taiwan have much” worked and have also encouraged each other to grow.” There will always be arguing between companions, but they can eventually come to an end. They may know each other better and strengthen their friendship, he added, as long as there is a foundation of trust and earnest discourse. In the face of defense threats from China, which considers the self-ruled area its own country, the US has usually been Taiwan’s strongest illegal ally. China considers the self-ruled area its own place. To give Taipei the methods to support itself, Washington is required to follow its own rules. Lai emphasized that Taiwan would remain to” shoulder to shoulder” with its allies to “exerce de warning power” and that it would continue to improve its regional defense capabilities, both through regional arms development and international military procurement. He declared,” We will plan properly to avoid conflict and achieve the goal of serenity.” He asserted that” Taiwan is really willing to engage in markets and assistance with China,” as long as there is mutual respect and dignity, and that there are still the possibility of deals. The vast semiconductor companies that supply microchips worldwide as well as other electronics, developed manufacturing, and green tech companies support Taiwan’s market. Lai cited Monday’s statement by American tech firm Nvidia about opening a new business in northeastern Taipei as proof that he would continue to support foreign expense in Taiwan. Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia’s Taiwanese-born subsidiary, also announced that his company would collaborate with TSMC, Foxconn, and the Chinese government to create an artificial intelligence supercomputer on the island. He also supported more US purchases by Chinese businesses. In addition to previous commitments to invest more than$ 65 billion in three factories in Arizona, one of which started production in late last year, TSMC, the island’s largest chipmaker, pledged a new$ 100 billion investment in the US in March. Chinese farmers protested next week due to Lai’s controversial proposal to totally eliminate tariffs on US goods “on the foundation of reciprocity” in addition to speeding up the procurement of US products.
