Seniority is strength in national politics. The most prized positions and leading committees are not determined by merit but by longevity. All you need to do to become a big winner in Congress is to maintain winning and stay away from the Grim Reaper.

The first obstacle is simple to overcome: 97 % of congressional incumbents who ran for reelection in 2024 were declared winners. It’s almost a slam-dunk with all the benefits of being an incumbent.
The next obstacle? Not at all.
Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-Va. ) passed away from cancer three days ago. He was the second representative to pass away since Jan. 2025.
Liberals made up the three.
Six representatives have passed away in business since April of this year. All six Democrats were present. In reality, if you go up to 2022, the only Democrats who lost to power were the last EIGHT.

Congress isn’t getting any younger.
It is the third-oldest in U.S. past and is 79 weeks older than the previous session.
According to an NBC News analysis of parliamentary participation and birth-date data, the 119th Congress is the second oldest since 1789, with an average member era of 58.9 years older.
Perhaps after all those other incidents, 11 of the 14 House people who are older than 80 are also Democrats, which is highly likely the next senator who will take office will also be a Democrat.
The Democrat Party is being distorted by this. And it’s a significant factor in MAGA’s decision to run over the horses:
Every ballot counts in a Congress where only a small percentage of the vote is held by Republicans. The peace bill was approved by Congress on Thursday by a vote of 215 to 214, with two Republican sagging in the lead. It’s not limited to the House of Representatives both. Only three of the 15 oldest senators in the Senate are Republicans ( Sen. Chuck Grassley, Sen. Mitch McConnell, and Sen. Jim Risch ).
All the rest are progressives, including well-known D.C. powerbrokers like Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Patty Murray, Richard Blumenthal, and Dick Durbin. ( Poor Chuck Schumer, who is now the 16th oldest senator, barely missed the cut at age 75 .) The Dems ‘ influence is ageing, and braintrust, and strength center.
