Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky. ) bragged in a 2024 Reason Magazine article titled” Thomas Massie is Railing Against the” Vie Signal Vote,” that” I have a history of being the only vote that was a “no.”

It’s a standing that’s well-earned because Thomas Massie is a natural-born critic with an obvious talent for drama. Take note of how his face lit up like a Cheshire Cat when he displayed his handy-dandy bill time button:
( Good news, guys: You can get your own copy of Massie’s pin for the affordable price of only$ 99! )
Being the only lone dissenter in the House of Representatives was a badge of honor for Massie, demonstrating that he alone had the courage to cast his liberal ballot. In the 420-1 resolution, which lightly condemned hatred, he was the only “no.” Yet The Squad voted in favor of it without any doubt!  ,
no Massie, though.
According to MSNBC’s manufacturer Steve Benen, Massie’s activities are “performative contrarianism.”
Massie was the only member of Congress to oppose the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act, as well as the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. Just two Republicans cast ballots this month against Trump’s” Big Beautiful Bill,” which was only 215 to 214 in favor.
It came just a few weeks after Massie was the only “no” voting on the GOP House resources. Thankfully, the funds was 217-215, which was a huge win.
Anyone can question Massie’s sincerity: he is a spending hawk who is deeply concerned about our ever-increasing national debt. It’s never a political strategy that’s been manufactured or used to serve a selfish purpose. In addition, shouldn’t there be room for at least one libertarian-leaning liberal in the House of Representatives in an ideal world?

However, this world is not appropriate. And Massie belongs in the House of Representatives, which is inappropriate.
He comes from a neighborhood that favors Trump with a 31 %. The Republicans and Democrats currently hold eight seats in the House. Every ballot counts when things are this shut.
Rep. Massie doesn’t care whether or not he can cast a credible ballot for House Republicans.
Because the House of Representatives is a creative figure, that’s a concern. You are one of the 435 election individuals, not the main executive. You are unable to accomplish something worthwhile on your own.
Being the hapless “no” voting without a doubt doesn’t produce you strong! It demonstrates your lack of authority that you were first elected in 2012 and that you still haven’t been able to persuade your associates to do the same. ( And 13 times is a long time, Mr. Massie, to be in Congress. For example, weren’t word limits a traditional position, either?
Massie is the least effective member of Congress if winning your colleagues ‘ hearts and minds is what gives him the most power. The man is completely powerless, and he is anti-Viagra.
He only offers his “performative zealotry” dress schtick, a TV debt clock pin, and a sense of impact-making potential. He’s only another frequency bump that the GOP needs to work around, he’s not.  ,
The unfortunate thing is that he could have been a benefit rather than a duty. The social realities of a fractious House of Representatives and the probable demise of Republicans in bounce districts had to be tempered by Trump’s” Big Beautiful Bill.” Democrats regaining control of the House in 2026 if they don’t take into account this political reality, and Massie would be left with nothing instead of getting 70 % or 90 % of what he wanted.

However, Massie didn’t bargain. He didn’t make any compromises. He prefers to have his components eat half a loaf of bread.
In the meantime, President Trump has to live, direct, and pass laws in the real world. He lacks the comforts of “performative contrarianism” and “virtue signaling” dramatics. Substance matters more than metaphor when you’re leader. And when your own side continues to cast ballots with the enemy, it’s even harder to win when you’re fighting tooth and nail to complete important legislation.
In 2027, Thomas Massie may run for governor of Kentucky. Or perhaps propose a presidential bid in 2028. A gentleman of his disposition did fit much better into either place.
However, he needs to smuggle the damn thing out of Congress.  ,
It’s a bad match for his abilities, given how they are. The GOP can no longer afford the luxury of Rep. Massie’s criticism of Trump’s resources, which ironically coincides with Rep. Massie’s criticism of his own.
