As the Trump administration makes claims that Harvard University’s school is plagued by Beijing-backed control activities, the school’s long-standing connections to China had become a liability. Harvard’s concerns about Chinese state control are never new. Some US politicians, many of them Republicans, have expressed concerns that China is using Harvard to sway approval for innovative technology. A White House national told Reuters on Friday that Harvard had “turned a blind eye to rebel CCP-directed abuse on-campus,” adding that the institution had” for too long allowed the Chinese Communist Party to abuse it.” Requests for comment were not promptly addressed by Harvard. Harvard has a long history of connections to China, including research alliances and educational centers geared toward China. The Foreign embassy in Washington stated that “educational markets and cooperation between China and the US are mutually beneficial and should not be stigmatized.” After 2020, Harvard forwarded Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps (XPCC ) officials with information on public health. The Chinese military organization was sanctioned that year by the US for its involvement in alleged human rights violations against Tamils and various Muslim ethnic groups in Xinjiang. US company intelligence agency Strategy Risks reported in another show that Ronnie Chan is a member of the China-United States Exchange Foundation. She facilitated a$ 350 million contribution to Harvard in 2014. The organization’s activities have been declared a foreign director by US law, making it necessary for US lobbyists to report those activities to the US government.
