Germany   makes its first military deployment worldwide since World War II. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made a visit to Lithuania on the situation of the establishment of a European equipped brigade to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. This is the first permanent military implementation abroad since World War II; it is significant because it aims to deter potential Russian aggression against , Lithuania, and the other European states,  , Estonia, and , Latvia, which are becoming more and more involved about , and Moscow’s.
The president said that” Russia, as it is today,” and that Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, also spoke in Vilnius, poses a danger to everyone. We are defending ourselves against this danger, which is why we are here today.
Although Germany has participated in foreign missions, its post-war peacenik tradition has previously limiting its primary military involvement. Thus, the Bundeswehr’s formation of this regiment marks a previously unheard turning point in the post-war time. By the end of 2027, the 45th Tank Brigade, also known as the” Lithuania Brigade,” will have reached full operational capacity with around 5, 000 troops stationed in Rukla and Rudninkai. The ceremony in , Vilnius  officially sanctioned the establishment of the , 45th Tank Brigade, also known as the” Lithuania Brigade.” After meeting with Merz, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausda declared:” This is a historic time. This is a time of action, duty, and confidence.
After decades of underfunding, this rollout is a part of a larger effort to strengthen the European army, the Bundeswehr. The choice is a part of a wider trend of members of NATO and other NATO countries increasing their protection budgets in response to concerns about potential Russian aggression and American pressure.
Merz claimed that” Germany , is heavily investing in its own armed forces” in addition to the new regiment. We also want to sign to our friends that we are now making significant investments in our stability, he added. Along with our associates, we are determined to protect the alliance’s country from any anger. Our safety is also our protection, just like the security of our European allies.
In 2022, then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged to increase German defence spending to the target of 2 % of GDP, and announced the establishment of a special account for the development of the Bundeswehr. Following , Russia , full-scale invasion of Ukraine in full-scale invasion of in Germany, and  have succeeded in achieving this objective owing to this bank, but the funds will work out in 2027. The new coalition government has political support for raising defense spending and removing the strictest debt-requirements. Merz, the second Chancellor to had served in the Bundeswehr, stated to the legislature that” the government will in the prospect provide all the funding the Bundeswehr needs to become the strongest regular military in , Europe.”
There have been indications of more angry Russian action, including “hybrid warfare” tactics being used in the Baltic Sea. A Russian spy planes was spotted in Belarus earlier this month to see a multinational, NATO, and military training.
