21 athletes were killed in a vehicle accident on a Nigerian highway on Saturday, according to authorities, who said the accident may have been caused by driver fatigue or increased speed. The afternoon crash, which did not involve any other vehicles, “might have occurred as a result of fatigue and excessive speed” after a long overnight trip, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps ( FRSC ). The 22nd National Sports Festival, which took place in Ogun state, 1, 000 kilometers ( 620 miles ) south of Kano, in the north of Nigeria, was when the athletes arrived. The games, which included traditional West African wrestling and wheelchair basketball, were recently referred to as” the unity, strength, and resilience that define us as a nation,” according to President Bola Tinubu. Road incidents are frequent on Nigeria’s poorly maintained roads as a result of a combination of driving and disrespect for customers regulations. According to FRSC files, Nigeria last year recorded 9, 570 highway incidents that resulted in 5, 421 fatalities.
