Lives at risk: Trump cuts slash safety funds for nation’s most dangerous work

As a result of the Trump administration’s cost-cutting initiative, more than a few work health training centers across the US may be forced to close as of the end of the summer. Nearly 90 % of its workforce has been lost, according to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health ( NIOSH), which funds training and research for some of the country’s most hazardous jobs. Just about 125 of the roughly 1, 000 workers were let go on April 1 after job cuts, according to union data gathered by Reuters. Although 300 new hires were made in May, the crew overseeing the 12 Centres for Agricultural Safety and Health, which support workers in gardening, planting, and checking, was not a part of this. Due to this, many centers are getting ready to near as their money runs out. Training programs run by organizations like the Alaska Marine Safety Education Association and the Fishing Partnership Support Services ( FPSS) are expected to close by July or September. These programs have given thousands of workers essential hands-on health training, including how to manage fires, administer second aid, build career boats, and use emergency stereo equipment. Without these officially funded training, experts warn that more workers will be in danger and that the strain on recovery services may grow. John Roberts, a retired Coast Guard officer and professor of FPSS health, commented,” The government’s return on investment is enormous.” The US department of health and human services, which controls NIOSH, said in a statement,” The work will continue. If they give us this money to do this training, it’s going lessen how much money has to be spent.” HHS supports uploading, fisheries, and farmers in America. Robert F. Kennedy, the health minister, defended the bureaucracy-simplifying decreases in March. The Administration for a Healthy America will then incorporate NIOSH. Despite the fact that fish, farming, and checking continue to be the least dangerous companies in the US, the decision was made. They make up only a small percentage of the national workplace, but they had a fatal wound level of 24.4 % per 100, 000 staff in 2023, which is seven times the national average. Many of the damaged employees work in rural areas, where it can take hours to get emergency medical attention. Through strong education, public health awareness, and safety research, the NIOSH-backed centers have over the years helped to lessen those risks. More than 5, 600 workers were trained by the Northeast Center for Occupational Health and Safety in 2024 only. In rural areas, cellular health clinics, mental health care, and opioid abuse prevention have been introduced by other centers. Many of these activities are in jeopardy because grant money is scheduled to expire between July and September, though. Staff at the Southeastern Coastal Center for Agricultural Health and Safety in Florida have now begun closing research programs and employee referral work. Director J Glenn Morris remarked,” We’re shutting down the primary education to the staff and the research.” Although some business associations offer exclusive teaching, the cost continues to be a hindrance for many. Health experts worry that several vulnerable workers will gain access to life-saving resources if the federal government does not continue to support them.
