The Long Island Sound was struck by a smaller plane carrying a 41-year-old man and a 17-year-old female on Sunday morning off the coast of Connecticut, but both miraculously survived, despite suffering only minor injuries, according to the New York Post. Around ten days after taking off from Bridgeport, the six-seater Piper PA-32 crashed near the Thimble Islands. The couple attempted an emergency getting at Tweed New Haven Airport before the collision by making a desperate call for assistance. They were unable to arrive on time, though. After the Sector Long Island Sound Command Center received an alert from the air traffic control building that the plane had gone down, the Coast Guard Station New Haven sent a 45-foot answer boat to the field. The first emergency contact was described as a “boat taking on liquid,” according to Branford fire department lieutenant main Jason Karpovich, before a operator realized it involved a sinking aircraft. About 25 hours after the tragedy, fire officers arrived at the accident site in a rescue boat, by which point the plane was completely submerged. A single-engine Piper PA-32 plane was designed by Piper Aircraft. The FAA continues to investigate the cause of the fall.
