Event has raised issues with the same-day voting registration method in Michigan.
Federal prosecutors claim a Chinese member and University of Michigan scholar who was accused of voting illegally has fled the country.
Haoxiang Gao allegedly cast an illegal ballot in the 2024 presidential vote at a site owned by Democrats to increase voter participation at the university’s Museum of Art.
According to several media accounts, Gao, 19, allegedly fled the country to China earlier this year to avoid being charged. Federal prosecutors filed an official complaint on May 30.
According to the Detroit News, the new criminal case revealed that he was able to leave the United States while holding a$ 5, 000 bond against state-level allegations of his illegal vote.
According to lawyers, Gao used a second Chinese card issued in his name to table Delta Flight 389 at Detroit Metropolitan Airport and soar to Shanghai on January 19 after giving up one. The United States does not have an abduction agreement with China, and it was unclear how he obtained the next card, it continued.
Gao’s tardiness in a court hearing and the release of a chair warrant, according to Votebeat Michigan, were the first instances where the situation got into trouble.
According to the outlet, it represented” an increase in a situation that has highlighted a flaw in the government’s same-day enrollment system,” prompting lawmakers and state officials to come up with innovative solutions to make sure it won’t happen again.
Gao reportedly registered and cast a ballot at the University of Michigan on October 27, where same-day and early election rules are more stringent. He declared that he was a citizen of the United States by signing the voter registration software.
He reportedly faced two misdemeanor counts, including false swearing to register to vote and an unfit elector trying to vote, even though he was lawfully resident of the nation.
As The College Fix recently reported, the Democratic-run website at the college’s Museum of Art intended to be a “fun… one-stop-shop” to increase voter participation.
According to the Detroit News,” there was no means for local election officials to prevent Gao’s poll from being counted after it was entered into a tabulator,” which caused national attention.
Gao is currently facing charges of trip to avoid prosecution, a criminal that could lead to a five-year sentence in federal prison, according to MLive.
