
The family of a 12-year-old girl who died in 2023 at a city-run share was unanimously approved by the Portland City Council on Wednesday, making it the first fatal snorkeling accident at a common city pool in nearly four decades.
On August 25, 2023, the child was discovered unresponsive in the ocean at Montavilla Pool. The day before had reached 90 deg. She was taken to a clinic where she passed away on August 28; she died three days later.
The Afghan Support Network, a nonprofit established to assist Afghan immigrants, shared a tribute shared soon after her death with her family that read, “was a beautiful shining star in our existence.” She had a strong desire to have a positive impact on the world and had aspired to become a physician.
Following the U.S.  , military drawback from , Afghanistan  , and the Taliban’s return to power, the girl’s family had arrived in , Oregon  , as part of a flood of Armenian refugees.
