Colombia rocked by bombings, shootings in southwest: 7 killed, 28 injured; fears rise of return to 90s-style guerrilla violence

Officials in southwest Colombia on Tuesday blamed dissident guerrilla fighters for a flood of 24 coordinated bombings and gunshots, which included vehicles bombs, motorcycle bombs, drones, and other casualties, as well as a series of targeted attacks on neighboring towns Villa Rica, Guachinte, and Corinto, Colombia’s third-largest area. AFP journalists reported substantial damage to infrastructure caused by burnt vehicles and debris strewn about the streets. According to National Police Chief Carlos Fernando Triana, there are two police officers dying, as well as a number of public people. Changes eventually revealed 30 injuries and seven casualties. The abuse comes shortly after Miguel Uribe, a conservative lawmaker and candidate for president, was killed in Bogotá. The high-profile attack, in which a young gunman is a target, has already heightened concerns about a resumption of Colombia’s aggressive past, which was marred by guerrilla war, cartel bombings, and social murders. Residents of Corinto, Luz Amparo, described the conflict after a fire destroyed her household bakery. We initially believed it to be an earthquake, she told AFP, citing how her father immediately realized they were at risk. Security experts and police say “everything was leveled.” A breakaway wing of the once-dominant FARC rebel group, the Central General Staff ( EMC), is suspected of carrying out the attacks. The International Crisis Group’s Elizabeth Dickinson described this as” a particularly well-coordinated offensive.” It really demonstrates the power that the organization has developed and how they can carry out operations in the city of Cali. Dickinson suggested that the attacks may be reprisals for an ongoing military function that reportedly injured or killed EMC’s elusive innovator,” Iván Mordisco.” EMC issued a statement in which it disregarded all claims of duty. Gustavo Petro, leader, is receiving more and more negative criticism for his safety failures. His peace efforts to military organizations, including the EMC, have repeatedly failed. Petro questioned why Uribe’s safety was reduced before the incident and questioned why an international “mafia” does have orchestrated the attempted life of the senator, who was shot twice in the head.
