After Typhoon Wutip slammed core Vietnam, five persons died and two are still missing, according to the country’s agriculture department. Over 70, 000 hectares ( 172, 000 acres ) of cropland were submerged in the storm’s widespread flooding. In Quang Tri territory, two people died, and two more are also unaccounted for in Quang Binh. With wind gusts averaging up to 128 km/h ( 80 mph ), Wutip made landfall in southern China on Saturday before becoming less of a tropical storm as it made its way across the Gulf of Tonkin. Officials in China’s Hainan state ejected thousands of residents before the storm arrived, shut down schools, and halted rail service. By the weekend’s close, reportedly, wutip is expected to wane and dissolve, according to AFP, citing the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. The Vietnam agriculture government noted that due to climate change, natural disasters are getting more frequent and severe in the nation. In 2024, tragedies claimed 514 lives—three times more than in 2023. Typhoon Yagi devasted northern Vietnam in September last month, killing 345 people and injuring an estimated$ 3.3 billion in damage.
