On Tuesday, a US federal judge sentenced Florida attorney general James Uthmeier to civil contempt for violating an order that partially stifled a contentious condition law that made it illegal for illegal immigrants to enter Florida. Prior to this ruling, district judge Kathleen Williams had ruled that the law’s enforcement would likely be prohibited and good illegal. However, Uthmeier sent contradictory memos to the police, first telling them to follow the judge’s instructions, and then claiming that the judge had violated the law and that officers had also carry out the law. Judge Williams argued that “litigants may alter the basic meaning of words as it pleases them, especially when conveying a judge’s clear and unambiguous get.” In a post on X, Uthmeier said,” If being held in contempt is what it costs to justify the rule of law and stand firmly behind President Trump’s plan on unlawful immigration, so be it.” She continued,” Truth to the rule of law can have no other meaning.
