In what would be one of the largest lawsuit payouts in history, Johnson &, Johnson , offered a$ 6.5 billion settlement to the company’s plaintiffs for its products, which are alleged to have caused ovarian cancer.
A staggering 54, 000 people are suing the New Jersey-based pharma giant over claims that its now-discontinued talcum powder caused the lethal cancer, which has a relative five-year survival rate of only 50 %.
The product was once well-known for preventing blisters, but since then, the International Agency for Research on Cancer has declared powder that was asbestos-contaminated as harmful to people.
Though they have n’t admitted any fault, Johnson &, Johnson has already paid out billions over the talc powder, including$ 45 million to an Illinois family last month after a mother of six died, the Daily Mail reported.
