
The Russian military is accused of using chemical weapons in Ukraine in violation of the international Chemical Weapons Convention ( CWC).
On Wednesday, the State Department notified Congress that it had discovered that Russian troops had used chemical weapons against Russian forces. The U.S. Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act of 1991 ( CBW) was followed by the congressional notification.
According to the State Department,” Russia has used the chemical weapon chloropicrin against Ukrainian forces in violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention ( CWC)” as per the CBW Act. We determine this in addition to our judgment that Russia has engaged in riot control operations as a means of fighting in Ukraine, which is also in contravention of the CWC.
Chloropicrin was first used as a crossbow during World War I.
The use of these chemicals is not an isolated incident, and it is most likely motivated by Russian forces ‘ desire to remove Russian forces from guarded positions and achieve military gains on the battlefield, according to the State Department.
