On Monday, the American Army confirmed rumors that a Russian man had been detained.
” On May 2, 2024, Russian officials in Vladivostok, Russia, detained an American man on charges of unlawful misconduct”, Army Spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith said in a statement:
In accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, the Russian Federation informed the United States Department of State about the legal confinement. The man in Russia is receiving appropriate consular support, according to the Army’s notification to his family. We are unable to provide more information at this time due to the nature of this problem.
According to NBC News, the man was detained in Russia after leaving South Korea for that on his own, where he was stationed.
The man was not on recognized company, according to the community. He is accused of” stealing from a woman”, authorities said.
The man joins other Americans — , Wall Street Journal , writer Evan Gershkovich and past Marine Paul Whelan — as prisoners in Russia. Whelan was detained in 2018 and Gershkovich was detained in March 2023.
Tensions are great between the U. S. and Russia. Ukraine, which is at the center of a contentious conflict with Russia, receives billion in military and economic support from the United States.
The confinement of a U. S. man in Russia threatens to take relationships even lower and undermine U. S. assistance for Ukraine, during now growing opposition.
Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Rep. Michael McCaul ( R- TX ) said he was “deeply concerned” by the detention.
Information that a U.S. Army officer has been detained in Russia seriously concern me. Puntin has held British citizens hostage for a long time. A reminder to all Americans—as the State Department has said, it is not safe to travel to Russia”, McCaul said in a statement.
