Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV ) claimed that coal power regulations from the EPA are cutting off the grid at the same time as the demand for electricity is rising on Monday during CNBC’s” Last Call.”
Host Brian Sullivan asked,” We’re going to have 25- 50 % more electricity era to match our AI and datacenter goals at the minimum in likely 7- 10 years. We’re building out renewable, we’re building out weather, we’re building out power store. That’s excellent. However, 90 % of the noxious emissions from coal would need to be captured under these new EPA regulations, which are at least in place or under discussion. I’m sure the coal industry will say, we ca n’t do that or it would be prohibitively expensive. Do you worry that we’ll stop producing energy when we actually need it more?
Manchin answered,” Well, not only am I worried about it, the FERC, the Federal Energy Regulatory]Commission ] and NERC]North American Electric Reliability Corporation], the people who basically evaluate our grid are telling us we’re in a danger zone right now and we’re throwing more demand into]it ] basically and taking off more dispatchable 24/7 power. But, there’s a change coming. However, you ca n’t replace something you’re dependent on 24/7 with with something better. That’s all. They’re certainly that already”.
Therefore Sullivan inquired,” But are we violently removing thing than putting things on.”
Manchin responded,” That’s precisely what the authorities have told me”.
Manchin praised the Inflation Reduction Act’s increased electricity generation earlier.
